Overview

The Wards Corner project focused on creating a vibrant and inclusive online space for a diverse community, blending history, culture, and engagement to reflect its unique identity and values.

Problem

The organisation faced several challenges with their existing website. SEO performance was poor due to missing or outdated keywords, and the site’s navigation lacked clarity, making it difficult for users to find what they needed. Event timelines and key updates, such as partnerships, were outdated or missing entirely, while staff and volunteering opportunities were not clearly presented. The overall tone of the site was overly formal, failing to convey warmth and inclusivity, and there was no language option for Spanish-speaking users. Additionally, the website lacked engaging visuals and interactive content, relying heavily on repetitive carousel images and leaving noticeable gaps in user experience on several pages.

Solutions

My solution as a designer was to create a vibrant, user-friendly design that not only showcases the community’s current activities but also tells the story of how it has grown and evolved over time. By starting with the history and explaining what has happened up to now, I wanted to give people a real sense of the community’s value and why they should feel inspired to be part of it.

I made sure the design included plenty of images and videos, creating a dynamic space where the community can regularly update events and share their stories. To make events even more accessible, I added a second header specifically for event details, helping users quickly find what they need. The final design highlights community engagement through sections dedicated to events, membership plans, and historical insights, while addressing key challenges like SEO, user flow, and accessibility. By incorporating high-quality visuals and inclusive language, the site feels warm, modern, and reflective of the community it represents.

Overview

Working with this client was an interesting challenge, as they didn’t have a clear idea of what they wanted. Additionally, the community itself included people of all ages, so the content needed to cater to everyone. My solution and best approach was to ask questions not about about how they felt working for this community. This helped me understand their unique values and perspective.

Since they didn’t have a brand guideline, I focused on colours that reflect the joy and vibrancy Latin communities are known for. I also learned that it doesn’t matter how many calls you have with a client, as long as you truly understand their goals as a business and as a community. This understanding shaped the design into something that felt authentic and inclusive for everyone involved.

Outcome

The client was surprised by the outcome of all our calls, especially how well the information is spread throughout the website. They also appreciated how clearly it communicates what they do and their history.
